We have not
begun to know
how
vast the universe
our galaxy, the oceans
or
what lies beneath
the frozen snow
We don’t know
How
the sun shines for centuries
not reduced to
just a glow
We don’t know
we don’t know much of anything
yet
we think we do
We think we know.

The gentle soul
who resides inside of me
takes care
to be
kind, pleasing to all
that
she perceives
to
need her care, her comfort
all the things
that
help someone thrive
and
be
the best they can
That’s what
the gentle soul
inside
of me
she strives
to be.

Remember when?
We were happy
The world turned
the sun shone
We were happy
No matter what
was said
in jest or a little angry
things could be worked out
We were happy
Now it seems
the world stands still
in
disbelief
The sun shines elsewhere
hiding
And
us?
We’re not happy.

You don’t know me
you’ve never seen me
But
I know you
Your heart is
evil
filled with hate
taking advantage of
the weak, the vulnerable
those looking
for
someone great
But
Unfortunately
all they get is
what’s good for you
what lines your pockets
and
those you bought
those that will participate
in your killing schemes, your lies
your hate.
You don’t know me
I wish
I didn’t know you.

I watch the squirrels fight
edging out one another
for a place at the feeder
for
just another bite.
Sometimes
there’s a truce
Sometimes
a bitter fight
Sometimes
a lone squirrel
eats
til he feels suffice.
Birds keep their distance
stay out of the fight
they wait their turn
a time when
all others have had their fill
All’s quiet
No more anger
No more strife.

I need the money
I need
the fame.
That’s what I tell myself
in
the hour of vain.
Neither will accomplish
a happy journey
through life.
Only create heartache
anger
misery and strife.

My heart, my thoughts and prayers
are with Ukraine and their strong heroic people
in this battle
they are courageously fighting.
My heart aches
Seeing armies invade, taking land
Not theirs
Hearing cries, bombs
Flashing
Deadly lights
The world reels
As despots steal countries
Not theirs
They don’t care
If lives are lost, hearts broken
Life torn apart
Seek a way to stop
This annexation of what is
Not theirs
Please God
Please show me
Show me how today.

How can I be something
I never should be?
How can I leave behind
all that has been good to me?
Where will I go?
What will I do?
No answers, only questions
I know
not
what to do.

I hear you calling
I see your face
yet
I don’t understand
all you’ve done
what
has been your choice.
If I answer
if
I smile to your face
does that mean
I’m part of
complicit with
what you’ve done
what
has been your choice?
