The caged bird flies
Deep into brilliant
Blue, blue skies.
The caged bird cries
Songs of lilting love
Her sweet voice sings
Of beauty, freedom
All things.
The caged bird dies
In the midst of bars holding
Holding her in.
No soaring in blue skies
Nor lilting love songs sung
For this was only a dream
Dreamt in
A dark night long.

Why haven’t I seen
Your heart open up
Your voice speak
Soft, lilting words
Why haven’t I known
The place where all go
To be safe and unhurt
Why haven’t I?
I don’t know why
I haven’t been able
To experience all
Of these things.
I do know they exist
And know
Someday I’ll see all these
Beautiful, wondrous things.
