On Fridays, I usually look back two years and revisit something I wrote during this same month. I call it ‘Look Back Friday’
Today, the piece I want to share is a poem I originally wrote for Remembrance Day in November 2018, and first brought back again in 2022. Now, I feel compelled to bring it forward once more and share it with you. . .
I heard the wild goose call
I heard her plaintive tone.
I bowed my head in honour
Of all those left
Left alone.
On the field of war and anger
In the battle
No one wins alone.
I heard the wild goose call
Come
Come bring your brave soldiers home.

The sun shines bright
Radiating, glowing
with
all it’s might.
Let me not
be standing in the shadows
not feeling
its’ love, warmth, beauty
and
delight.

cause as you may know
or can see
we’re all unique
never not the same
not the same as
you and me.

Take hold of me

Protect, guide me
Through the darkest night
Let no harm come to me
Or those I love

I am a survivor
I survived hatred, anger
things
that made me a victim
I am a survivor
I came through
growing into someone
who understands how it happened
I am a survivor
Only hurt, remorse for those
who inflicted that hatred
that anger
I am a survivor
Have moved forward
built a life full of love, generosity
no hatred, some anger
I am
I am a survivor.

Maybe tomorrow
Maybe
Another day
Maybe it’ll feel like forever
In the way you feel
Today.
But
Your end will come
In a moment
Or
It may have come
Yesterday.
Your purpose, your mission
Is
To live each moment
Each day
With joy and happiness.
So
When you close your eyes
For forever
You’ll smile
And
You’ll say
“That was fun
That was, a good day!”

Terrible things have happened
Terrible things
Terrible things live
Exist.
We must live
Trying
Not to harbour
But
Eliminate
Those terrible things.
Not hear, feel
Allow
Those awful
Awful
Terrible things.

Don’t tell me
I must be the same
same as you, not me.
Don’t tell me
my beating heart
doesn’t count.
Don’t tell me
my thoughts are just lies.
Don’t tell me
the tears I weep will never
bring back ones lost.
Don’t tell me this
I ask of you
I plead, I cry.

I don’t care
if you’re white or black
whether you’ve seen the sacred cow
or
any of that
that
makes us different
in
thoughts and acts
we are still human beings
we are family
joined
it seems
to live life as best we can
making
full of love for all
all
of us
humans
and
other beings.
